Types of CoCs required for vehicles

European Certificate of Conformity (EU CoC)

The EU CoC certifies a vehicle meets European safety, emission, and environmental standards. It's required for registering new vehicles in the EU and EEA, covering passenger cars, motorcycles, and light trucks. Issued by the manufacturer, it ensures compliance, especially for imports between EU countries or from outside the EU.

UK Certificate of Conformity

Post-Brexit, the UK CoC certifies vehicles meet UK-specific safety and environmental standards. It is required for registering new and imported vehicles, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and motorcycles.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) Certificate (USA)

The FMVSS Certificate confirms that vehicles imported into the U.S. comply with federal safety, emissions, and technical standards. Required for registration, it covers passenger cars, motorcycles, trucks, and buses.

Japanese Certificate of Conformity

This certificate verifies that vehicles meet Japan’s safety and emissions regulations. It's required for registering new and imported passenger cars, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles in Japan.

China Compulsory Certification (CCC) for Vehicles

Vehicles sold or imported into China are certified by the CCC to comply with local safety and environmental laws. It is necessary for the registration of both domestically made and imported automobiles, including motorbikes and passenger cars.

Certificate of Conformity for Special Vehicles

Certain countries require a particular CoC for special vehicles, such as ambulances and agricultural machinery, to guarantee that they meet safety and technical standards to be legally registered.

Customs and Import Certification (Worldwide)

Non-EU and non-U.S. countries often have unique vehicle certification processes, such as Australia’s ADR or Brazil’s Inmetro Certification. These certifications ensure vehicles meet local safety and environmental standards.

Emission-Specific Certificates

Regions like California and the EU require additional certificates for environmental standards, such as CARB and Euro 6, to control vehicle emissions and comply with local laws.

Importing a Vehicle (General Considerations)

A CoC is typically needed when importing a car to demonstrate that it complies with regional safety and emissions regulations. For customs, other paperwork such as invoices and ownership documentation could also be required.
